Is it bad being "just" an engineer?

So many people want to become CTO.

Very few of them understand themselves enough to know if a CTO job is for them or not.

Some people are phenomenally good engineers, but terrible business strategic thinkers.

When those people are moved into a CTO role, they start causing havoc and let themselves and others down.

To become a true CTO, you need to understand first why you're doing it.

Is it just because of the status you imagine it provides.

Or perhaps because you want more money?

Or because you want to develop into a business leader?

If it's for status or money:

You can get those much faster and better by doing stuff you love, rather than getting a job you think will get you those things.
