First time CTOs and Women (and other minority groups) are more likely to be appointed to leadership positions during times of crisis or downturns, where the risk of failure is high.
It manifest in several ways:
Crisis Appointments:
Appointed during periods when a company is facing significant challenges, such as financial difficulties, technological crises, or reputational damage. These situations inherently carry higher risks, making success less likely and increasing the chances of being blamed for failures.
High Expectations with Limited Support:
1st time and women CTOs might face high expectations to turn around the company or implement rapid technological advancements.
But often receive less support, fewer resources, and less latitude to make mistakes.
Scrutiny and Pressure:
Subjected to greater scrutiny and pressure. Their performance is closely watched, and any perceived failure can be more harshly judged, reinforcing stereotypes (and their own personal impostor syndrome) about their capabilities in tech leadership.
